National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has expressed his support for the removal of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Speaking during a church service at Wamunyu Catholic Church in Machakos County on Sunday, September 29, 2024, Wetang’ula backed leaders who have accused Gachagua of tribalism, asserting that those who disrupt the nation’s peace and unity must be held accountable, regardless of their position.
He emphasized that every Kenyan has the right to enjoy peace, as outlined in the 2010 Constitution. Wetang’ula further cautioned leaders to be mindful of their words and their potential impact on the country, urging them to reduce political rhetoric for the greater good.
“Tunataka tue na viongozi ambao wanajua the limit where to go, what to say, where to say and the impact, nawaomba wakenya haswa viongozi, mpunguze siasa ya kukata kata nchi yetu na kabila au religion, kwa sababu katiba yetu inasema every Kenyan has a right to live on property and enjoy peace anywhere and everywhere in this country,” he stated.
He continued, “Lazima tujue our diversity is the source of strength na ndio tutaishi, kama kuna mtu yeyote anataka kuvuruga amani ya nchi atolewe, because we want peace from everybody.”
This statement comes amid a looming impeachment motion against Gachagua, who is being accused of abusing his office. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has confirmed that he has signed the motion to remove the Deputy President.
“It is true, I can confirm that there is an impeachment motion against the deputy president, and as the member of parliament for Kikuyu, I have appended my signature to it and I will support it,” the outspoken Kikuyu MP said. He alleged that Gachagua has been sabotaging the Kenya Kwanza administration, making it difficult for them to fulfill their mandated roles. Lawmakers are expected to table the motion in Parliament on Tuesday.
