A building that on September 24, 2023, collapsed in Mirema, Nairobi County went down due to poor structural concrete used when it was being built.

In a statement, the National Construction Authority (NCA) boss Mr Maurice Akech said that investigations had not been concluded and they were still ongoing.

He also said that anyone who will be found guilty will be prosecuted in court.

“Any person who will be found to have acted in contravention of the law or defied directions which have been issued by NCA will be subjected to the full force of the law,” Mr Akech said.

Equally, he said that an adjacent building had also been affected and damaged following the collapse.

This means that the owner of the house that collapsed will have no option but to ensure that they repay for the damages. Also damaged is a vehicle and Kenya Power Company properties.

However, NCA revealed that the owner of the house had the necessary documentations from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and from the county of Nairobi.

On Sunday, the building collapsed within Mirema Area but no casualties were reported. The building was still under construction.

The incident took place just a few days after Nairobi County announced that it had started a crackdown on buildings that do not meet the standards and also are being constructed without permits.

Meanwhile, another building that developed cracks following construction of a neighboring building is still standing.

In August, the building which is located within Carwash area developed cracks and the tenants were asked to vacate with immediate effect.

The tenants were asked to vacate the building which indicated signs of collapsing.

Area residents who spoke to Nairobi News said the building had already started sinking and it would be dangerous if the residents continued living there.

“Things, as we talk are very serious, the building had cracks and had started sinking. The best thing that they could do is just vacate,” Mr Ibrahim Karanja, a resident, said.
