A Tanzanian prophet has opened up about the reason he personally blocked the late Zimbabwean tycoon Wicknell Chivayo from attending one of his overnight church services, in remarks that have drawn widespread attention following Chivayo’s death.

Prophet Mwamposa, sharing his account via an Instagram post by Edwin Odemba on Monday, October 5, 2026, said the businessman had reached out through representatives requesting to attend a night vigil at his church, but that he turned the request down himself.

“Chivayo lived as though he would never die. He wanted to come for the overnight service we had the other day. I am the one who refused. I said no,” the prophet stated, adding that fellow pastors who were present at the time could confirm his account.

Did Chivayo contribute to many pastors?

Mwamposa explained that his decision was rooted in how Chivayo’s attendance would have been perceived publicly.

The tycoon had a well-documented reputation for donating generously to religious leaders and churches, and the prophet worried that his presence would muddy the waters for his congregation.

“I told them it is true Chivayo contributes to many pastors. If he had come for the service, many people would view it politically. Others would think that all we do here and have, we have received from him,” he said. “We want people to know it is God who helps us.”

The prophet acknowledged that his decision puzzled many at the time, since refusing a man of Chivayo’s profile and generosity was unusual.

Chivayo was widely knownfor his flamboyant lifestyle and his habit of making extravagant gifts, including a high-profile incident in which he gifted a spa therapist a Mercedes-Benz valued at KSh 13 million.

His relationship with the church community was equally prominent, with many pastors across the region reportedly among his beneficiaries.

Did Chivayo plan to build helipad?

Following his death, his wife and family received mourners at the couple’s home, and details emerged that he was laid to rest at a cemetery alongside his wife.

A video of the late businessman sharing plans to build a helipad at his rural home also surfaced after his passing, underscoring what Mwamposa described as a man who appeared to believe he had endless time ahead.

Mwamposa had previously made headlines when he advised people who had received gifts from Chivayo to destroy them, a statement that stirred considerable debate online.
