Former Bonchari MP Zebedeo John Opore has passed away. His lastborn son, Robin Opore, confirmed that the former legislator died on Friday at a Nairobi hospital after a prolonged illness. At 77 years old, Opore was first elected as Bonchari MP in 1997 on a Ford People ticket and also served as Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting before losing his seat to Charles Onyancha in 2007.
Robin described his father as a devoted family man with a strong passion for education. Leaders from Kisii County have expressed their condolences, mourning Opore as a steadfast leader who championed the interests of residents both in and out of Parliament. Nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri Nyaituga noted that the veteran politician commanded deep respect from both the young and old, stating that Bonchari residents have lost a vital voice with Opore’s passing.
“Throughout his illustrious political career, he demonstrated an unshakable commitment to his constituents; my prayers and thoughts are with the family,” Okenyuri said.
Kisii County MP Doris Donya remembered Opore for encouraging many women to pursue political positions in Kisii County, sharing, “He paid for my Jubilee nomination fee in 2017, and it was during his time that Bonchari residents benefited from development from the National Government.”
