Sean Andrew, grandson of Kenya’s third president Mwai Kibaki, has spoken candidly about his desire to be seen as his own person rather than a footnote in his family’s political history.
During a recent interview with radio presenter Alex Mwakideu, Sean made clear that while he understands the weight of his surname, he wants his own name to carry its own meaning.
Why Sean wants a legacy beyond the Kibaki family name
“The goal is to build my own identity. I do not want to be underneath any other identity beyond that. It’s just Sean Andrew. I’m just Sean, known as that to my friends, my partner and everyone. They call me Sean, and that’s just what it should be. Kenyans can call me Sean too,” he said.
Sean has spent years carving out a life that stands on its own. He has worked in modelling, content creation, real estate and business, and has also been involved with AfriCare, a healthcare venture focused on providing specialised support to children. Wildlife conservation is another area he has publicly expressed a passion for.
He has previously been direct about having no interest in politics, saying that Kenyans can contribute meaningfully to society without ever seeking elected office.
It is a stance that sets him apart from the expectations that often follow those born into prominent political families.
