A Kenyan watch enthusiast’s sharp eye has landed President William Ruto’s timepiece squarely in the public conversation, after the creator spotted and identified the luxury watch the president wore during a media engagement at Kisumu State Lodge.
The video, posted by @meetminutes.ke on Instagram, opens with a tongue-in-cheek “trigger warning” before diving into a detailed breakdown of the president’s wristwear.
The creator identified the piece as the Rolex GMT-Master II, reference 126715CHNR, a full 18-carat Everose gold model with a brown-and-black Cerachrom bezel.
“Very, very nice watch,” the creator said, while pointedly declining to name the camera price and instead urging viewers to look it up themselves.
TUKO.co.ke can confirm the watch retails for over KSh 7 million according to Rolex.
What makes Ruto’s Rolex watch so special?
The GMT-Master II 126715CHNR is built around a 40 mm Oyster case made entirely from Rolex’s proprietary Everose gold alloy, a material the brand developed in-house and has used across its pink-gold Oyster collection since 2005.
The “CHNR” in the reference name stands for Chocolate Noir, a nod to the two-tone brown-and-black ceramic bezel.
The timepiece is designed for frequent travellers, featuring a second time zone display via a dedicated 24-hour hand and rotating bezel.
Its independently adjustable hour hand allows the wearer to switch local time without affecting the minutes or seconds.
The black dial uses Rolex’s Chromalight luminescent display, which emits a long-lasting blue glow for visibility in low-light conditions.
The watch is completed by an Oyster bracelet fitted with an Oysterlock clasp and an Easylink extension system, which can stretch the bracelet by roughly 5 mm for added comfort.
What truly launched the clip into viral territory was not just the eye-watering price tag. The President’s son, George Ruto, liked the video, drawing even more attention to the post on Wednesday, 16 September.
Kenyans online had plenty to say about the whole situation:
